2008-11-15 - 12:50 p.m. So I definitely haven't written in a while, even though I kickstarted the fun again in July. Once more, with feeling. I work at a high school now as an English teacher in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The job is glorious, the adminstration makes my face hurt, and the kids make me lose my mind because I heart their hearts so much. Some great things that I have heard so far: 1) A dean was asking a student of mine, Anthony, which of his neighbors he goes to when his family needs sugar and Anthony's response was, "Mistah, we don't ever run out of sugar! We BLACK. That's why we always making kool-aid all the time." 2) A large, special-ed student with lesbian tendencies who prefers to go by her alias "Delilah" or her MC name "Baby Psycho" remarked to me after I tried to get her to laugh by dancing: "I don't like your pants, I don't like your dance, and you ain't invited to my party." 3) I was walking through the hallway on the way to the bathroom and passed two black students. About 10 feet after me, one of the students said to the other, "Oooh, he ugly." "Who?" "That teacher back there--he MAD ugly." This is why I am completely obsessed with the youth of Brooklyn. Any questions? Also, Lauren and I are trying in earnest to find an apartment here that fits my conservative budget. This is hard. The upside is that we have a meeting later this afternoon with a broker whose name is Pepsi. What could go wrong?
