If I were an English teacher, which perhaps one day I will be again, I would do this as a project with my kids:
Instead of book reports or papers about books they wrote, one time I would have them make a myspace or facebook profile for a character in the book--they would have to pick music that would play on the profile, make friends, have guestbook entries, a biography, a wallpaper that reflected the character's aesthetics, etc.
OR.
I would have them make a blog as one of the characters, plotting out the storyline over 10 or so entries in the voice of the character. Again, I'd like to see fake guestbook entries by the character's friends.
Wouldn't I make a great English teacher?
