Last night a group of volunteers consisting of me and four girls went to dinner with a big director of our organization from Washington. The guy was pretty conservative and thus I kept myself pretty tame, didn’t flash any crazy jewelry, or talk about my love of the Scissor Scissors. Anyway, at the end of our dinner, he said something along these lines:

“If you guys are feeling lonely for some reason, I would suggest reading some of the early American Revolution literature. For example, John Adams’ Letters to Abigail is particularly good. You really get a good sense of how lonely it was for these men at the time and what they were up against. You read his letters and you can sense how all he wanted, and I mean no disrespect to Steve over here by this, was the comfort of a woman.”

Yes, this was said out loud in front of other volunteers and my managers. You can imagine the kind of self-control it took to not giggle for the continuation of dinner. However, I bit my lip and tried not to feel left out, what with the other men in the room pining for the bosom of a woman.
