I know someone might punch me in the nuts for this, but I might seriously be in love with Alanis Morissette. Not like, “OMG, her songs are like, my life. I LUV U!” but more like, I would seriously consider entering into a serious long-term relationship with her. Dude, have you heard her songs? She’s all, “Hey, I have all of these faults. Thanks for accepting me for who I am. Let’s talk through our problems.” Alanis, I know you’re all hot and heavy and married-or-whatever-it-is-that-seriously-spiritual-people-do-instead-of-the-“outdated”-institution-of-marriage-do. That’s cool. Call me!

I also wanted to point my affection in the direction of one delightful Swedish import and I am not talking about IKEA white organizational stacking cubes. I am talking about Amy Diamond, a 12 year old (maybe she’s 10?) who is rocking the satellite stations here in Turkmenistan. She has this music video for her song, “What in it for me?” where she shimmies around her backyard pool with her playpen friends. She seriously looks like she’s eight. And there she is, this slightly pudgy red-headed Swedish girl in a green doily-esque bathing top, sitting on the edge of the pool singing about how she plays “for keeps” and that “this ain’t a one man show” while her friends beat the junk out of each other with nerf noodles. I would scoff more heartily at this song if it weren’t for the fact that the Swedish seriously know how to write the hell out of a pop song. So, to the nation that brings a healthy marriage of socialism and capitalism, I tip my hat to you, your songwriters with an amazing robot-like ability to pump out pop songs by the minute, and eight year olds looking for love between summer reading books.
