2005-11-18 - 11:32 a.m. As some of you guys can see from my pictures on the flickr site, the girls at my school have to wear a pretty conservative school uniform: floor-length Turkmen dress with an embroidered collar to show your love for the homeland. However, recently, they’ve slowly started mandating a change in the school girls’ uniforms from a single material dress to the floor into something a little more edgy and liberal: a knee-length maroon skirt, a white blouse, and a matching maroon vest with embroidery along the collar down the center. Given the general inability to sort “dowdy” from “trendy”, most of the girls end up wearing long-sleeved satin-like blouses with doily collars for lack of better options. So what my school has ended up with are cadres of girls who, for better or worse, look like an enormous choir from an early ‘70s folk collective swaying in sweet, pleated skirt harmony. Afternoon Delight, indeed.
