2005-11-10 - 6:04 p.m. Now that I’m on a roll with shout-outs, I want to give it up for my 6th form student, Sapar. I have just come to find out that he is a fine connoisseur of the television show “Full House” and for this, he gets my finest salute. It started a few months ago when he asked me in Turkmen, “Mr. Steve, do you know Full House?” and after I over the initial shock of someone knowing what Full House was, I told him that I might have seen it a few times (e.g. every day of my life). He then spurted out gads upon gads upon gigabytes of information of Full House plot lines that I had forgotten: “Mr. Steve, remember when DJ was dating her boyfriend Steve and Danny wouldn’t let her? Yeah, that was great. Or what about the time when Stephanie got lost in Disney World? Yeah, that was amazing too. Isn’t Kimmy Gibbler amazing?!?” One day he asked me where San Fransisco was on a map and after I showed him and asked if it was because that’s where Full House his, he answered, “San Fransisco! Golden Gate Bridge FOREVER! YESSSS!” and ran away with his fist high in the air. He’s 11 years old, people. And Turkmen. This is amazing. A few days later, he was reminded me of the radio show that Uncle Jessie and Joey used to have their basement when I remembered that Uncle Joey had that weird t.v. show with the beaver. So I asked Sapar if he remembers when Uncle Joey would say, “Cut it out!” with the hand motions. Sapar laughed and was like, “Yeah, but when I watched it, we didn’t get it in English. We would watch it in German. He would just say, ‘SHLIFF UNT AUS!’” After I doubled over and laughed so hard my face turned bright red, he ran circles around me the rest of day screaming, “SCLIFF UNT AUS!” in the most perfect German voice, with the perfect Uncle Joey hand signals. Everyone else rolled their eyes, because seriously, Sapar is a spaz. So this is my digital shout-out to my terribly amazing student, Sapar, who knows buzz phrases from Full House in German. This one’s for you, little friend of mine. (If you want to see pictures of him, he’s in the pictures of me and my students entitled “sacred texts!” He’s the one with the insanely pale white skin and the amazing facial expressions.) Also, I've added a link at the very bottom of the page "to the see the sandy land" that will take you to my flickr.com page.
