The day after "Birthday: The Musical!" Here we are, number 23. It's just you and me for a year and I want you to know that from here on out, there's going to be a lot bitching and complaining coming out of my mouth. Ok? Ok.

Some things I thought I'd let you know.

1)It seems that boyfriend has some tough competition now from the Turkmen girls. Just yesterday I got sent the second in a series of love notes from an 18 year old girl who comes to my poetry class every Monday. While the first one consisted solely of the phrases, "I love you but I am afraid for you to finding my secret," yesterday's is much more eloquent in its passionate cries of forbidden, forevernever love:

"I like you. Especially how you tell poems. When you are looking to me I'm full of love flame. Even you're looking to some-when else, I'm stiil in of love flame and waiting to you next look. I'll not tell people my love to you, espext you. I want to wait when you'll be decided. You know what do you need to decide. Please don't tell to anybody about me! [If she only knew I was publishing this on the internet] Please write to me too. Give teh letters that you wrote to Serdar. Bye. -The girl who wants to be introdused closer with you!!!! I hope that you'll not be disagree! Alexia."

I'm tempted to send a letter of reply that only consists of, "I do guys. And I seriously like it a lot. So much in fact, that I want to spend the rest of my life only doing it with guys. Especially with this one," and attach a picture of the boyfriend. A cold hard slap in the face of traditional Turkmen culture and the romantic moanings of an 18 year old. Two birds, one stone, one terribly culturally unadapted PCV.

2) My 11 year old sister got drunk last night at my birthday dinner, which was kind of awesome in a terrible way. She shyly asked to have a taste of the beer we bought and downed the full juice glass full in 10 seconds. She immediately poured herself another juice glass full and downed that in another 10 seconds. After that, I don't how much or if she drank much else, but she was wobbling around the room for the next hour and asking everyone what they were doing. She came over to me and whispered loudly, "I'm like you were last Thursday," and after I reminded her that I was drunk last Thursday, she said, "Yeah. I'm that too right now" and toddled away into a bedroom to dance with the lights off and sing loudly to Bollywood music. She of course denied being drunk this morning, but it was terrifyingly awesome to see my traditional, Turkmen 11 year old girl sister drunk off of beer.
